NEW DRIVING SCHOOL?
THE HON LUKE DONNELLAN MP
MINISTER FOR ROAD SAFETY
Dear Luke.
A small item in the Melbourne Herald Sun on February 16 was headed DRIVING A SAFE FUTURE.
It tells us that "the world's first dedicated road safety education complex will be built at the Melbourne Museum in Carlton".
It says that "20,000 high school students are expected to visit in the first year".
1. What organisations and or departments developed the plans for this new road safety complex?
2. Were motorcycle & scooter riders representatives (The Motorcycle Advisory Group or later the Motorcycle Expert Advisory Panel) invited to have input when planning this road safety complex?
3. Will the 20,000 high school students be told anything about motorcycles & scooters on our roads when they visit this road safety complex?
Sincerely,
Damien Codognotto OAM

NON ANSWER
THE VICTORIAN MINISTER FOR ROAD SAFETY, Luke Donnellan MP, was asked a specific question in State Parliament by The Greens' Transport Spokesperson, Samantha Dunn MP.
MOTORCYCLIST DIES IN WANTIRNA CRASH Thursday, 12 January 2017 10:05 Police are currently at the scene of a fatal crash that has claimed the life of a motorcyclist in Wantirna. Members believe the female motorcyclist was travelling west on Boronia Road when she stopped at red traffic lights just before 9am. It’s believed a truck, also travelling west, failed to stop and collided into the rear of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist became trapped under the truck until she was freed by emergency services, however she died at the scene. The driver of the truck, a man believed to be in his 30s, is currently assisting police with their enquiries. Westbound traffic on Boronia Road is being diverted from Wantirna Road and Mountain Highway. Police will investigate the cause of the crash and anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
To all VICTORIAN MPs. THE GREENS Another rider has been killed while obeying the law, waiting for the lights to change. She was hit from behind. Our sincere sympathy to her loved ones. When are our elected representatives in Cabinet going to have the courage to implement the recommendations of our all-party Parliamentary Road Safety Committees? The 2012 Parliamentary Inquiry report recommended an independent road crash data authority. There won't be a significant reduction in road trauma until the independent authority is established. As our population grows road trauma will increase unless we update our road safety systems as recommended. You can't effectively plan road safety initiatives and safe infrastructure without reliable, scientific data. An independent road crash data authority will save money in the medium to long term. It will offer better career paths for those already working in the area. Our crash data collection systems are decades out of date. An independent crash data authority will benefit ALL road users. It is a terrible thing that we lose another rider so early in 2017. Damien Codognotto OAM Spokesperson Independent Riders' Group (IRG)
Dear Damien We finally received an answer from the Minister for Roads around fatalities, but it was pretty much a non answer (see attached). I'll be asking for the question to be reinstated as it hasn't been properly answered. Cheers Samantha Samantha Dunn MP Member of the Legislative Council for the Eastern Metropolitan Region

MUARC BIKE STUDY RESPONSE
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
THE HERALD SUN
(Send one yourself dear reader. hsletters@heraldsun.com.au )
Shirley and Newton (Herald Sun letters Feb. 9) make our point on driver excuses.
Most motorcycle & scooter riders own and drive cars so we pay twice to be on the road. Most car drivers have not used a bike in traffic so there's a lot they don't know about two-wheelers. Responsible riders do not ride their bikes as if they are in cars because it's very dangerous to do that. Riding and driving are two different skills. Bike riders generally are safer car drivers because they have both skills.
There IS a law requiring Victorian novice riders to wear hi viz vests, and they do. And, virtually all motorcycles & scooters sold in Australia for nearly 25 years have no light switch so the headlight is on all the time.
But you won't see that unless you look.
Monash University Accident Research centre used science to find that most car/bike collisions are due to driver error. Drivers fail to give way and riders go to hospital. Please listen to the road safety experts and LOOK BIKE when you are in your car.
