BE CAREFUL OUT THERE

AT LEAST THREE PARLIAMENTARY INQUIRIES in Victoria have documented unreliable and even misleading road crash data but VicPol continues to inflate legitimate road rider figures with unrider casualties. Because crash data is unreliable, the real cause of road motorcycle & scooter casualties is too often listed as "lost control of vehicle" when the crash may have been caused by a driver's error, animal strike or damaged roads.

Car drivers can cause a crash then leave the scene. A kangaroo or wombat can drop a bike then limp off into the scrub. And, potholes kill.

IT'S ALL GOOD

TOY RUNs don't just do good on the day. All TOY RUNs remind people to give and they improve the image of riders and that makes us safer on our roads.

The TOY RUN for FATHER BOB in Melbourne collected a van load of gifts and lot's of donations on Sunday, December 11, 2016. It also generated three channel TV news and a lot of online coverage. People who could not be at the run, or who forgot, are reminded to donate to FATHER BOB at the office in Albert Park or through the website.

TAC STATS 2016

ACCORDING TO TAC STATS,  lives lost in the calendar year to midnight, December 12, 2016, 7 cyclists and 52 motorcyclists have died on Victorian roads.

That is 742 percent more motorcycle deaths than bicycle deaths. Yet we are the poor cousins to push bike riders in that we don't attract the same funding and advocacy to improve our safety on the roads.

ROAD DISASTER IN VIC

TASSIE TOY RUN - DEC 3 2016

Don't believe everything you read in the papers. It was thousands not hundreds and it was a sensational event. Families and tourists lined the route and waved from bridges. The police operation was excellent and rider behaviour first class. It took me back to MRA TOY RUNs in Melbourne in the early 1990s and  late 1980s. Great to be a part of. Congratulations MRAT. Well done.

BIKE BAN NOT FOR WESTFIELD.

Dear Damien
Thank you again for your time on the phone earlier today - and we appreciate you getting in touch.
As we discussed, I'd like to confirm the following:
• We’ve had no incidents or issues in relation to the story that was aired on A Current Affair last night. In the meantime, we continue to work closely with police as always, in the interests of maintaining safety as our priority.
• People are banned from our centres based on their behaviour, not their appearance or membership of particular group within the community
I hope this addresses some of your concerns regarding last night's story, for which you'll note we declined to comment.
Please feel free to get in touch at any time, and thank you for the articles you sent through on the successful toy run initiative.
Kind regards,
Julia

THE SPIN IS THE PAY-AS-YOU-DRIVE/RIDE SCHEME WILL REPLACE OTHER TAXES AND FEES.

I don't think this compulsory GPS system is for the benefit of road users. I think it is another step towards remote fines and tolls and towards recording where law-abiding citizens' vehicles are at all times.

TOY RUN IN COLLIE WA

G'Day Damian.

Still going strong I see. Collie WA has a date change to Sat. 10th. Bunbury not doing theirs now and into the future. Council red tape I'm told.

They have done 34 till now.  ( A charity to help those less fortunate than us after all )

This is our 20th. Have grown from 33 to 200+ last year. Expecting loads more this year due to Bunbury not running theirs.

My 2 sons have started a facebook page to promote our Ride. So far it is doing well in that area. Electronic media seems to have an advantage nowdays.

Regards and still trying to touch base sometime.

ROAD TOLL UP IN SPITE OF CAMERAS & SHOCK ADS

MOTORBIKE & SCOOTER RIDERS EXCLUDED AGAIN

BICYCLISTS get a big mention in the Future Melbourne Articles and survey because they are committed to their mode of transport and lifestyle and pushbike riders do write letters and fill in surveys.

Motorcycle & scooter riders don't anymore. At least, not in sufficient numbers to be included in editors and public servants' thinking.

Help change that. Do the survey and write to the Herald Sun and/or your MP.

MY OLD BEEMER

This R65 gave me many years of good service both as a tourer and as a courier/work bike. The Garner's  put the sticker on the back when it  was in their North Melbourne workshop for a service. It spoke true so I kept it and made sure the photo was archived. I rode it till it began to fall apart.

One day, as I was outbound on Cotham Road, a bit past Genazzano, there was a loud bang! I thought a car had backfired, There was a clattering. My muffler passed me heading down the hill faster than I was. I thought time to die old girl. But then ... nah. A bloke in Moorabbin welded on a couple of racing cans someone else threw out. The R65 went  on for 11 registrations, loud and proud.

It's not waht you ride, it's that you ride.

CAMP OVEN COMP

LEON BRIGGS, the supporter of the Border Bike Fest who lent us his exaggerated Harley bike sculpture, is one of the organisers of the Cook-Off.  He said he would push the event out to our members. Hence my emailing this to you via Sec. Bill.

Please have a look at the web site www.kiewacampoven.com  There is a lot on info and it looks like a good day out.  So get that campoven out of the shed and start practising your country cooking skills.

I’ll be nominating this at the Ulysses Committee meeting for the ride committee to put the day on our ride calendar.

About The Cook-Off

The Cook Off is an exciting team event where participants will compete to be declared the Kiewa Valley Camp Oven Cook Off Champions, also known as The Champions.

The Cooks will be required to cook using a traditional bush cooking method –  camp ovens over a fire or hot coals.  Your gourmet creation will then be tasted and judged by  (insert dramatic music here)…

The Consumers.   The Consumers are a very special team of people, who have elected to take on the enormous task of choosing The Champions.

The inaugural Kiewa Valley Camp Oven Cook Off is being held in the beautiful hamlet of Tangambalanga.  Better known to the locals as Tangam, this rural Victorian town in the beautiful Kiewa Valley is the perfect spot.  It is surrounded by Mount Murramurrangbong, sister town Kiewa (just on the other side of the Kiewa River), Kergunyah and Dederang just up the valley.

When is it?
The festival will be held on Saturday 19th November, 2016.  Gates open from 10am and Main Course will be served to The Consumers (ticket holders) at 1pm.

COUNCIL ELECTIONS IN VIC

L to R: Heather Ellis, Mayor Roberto Colanzi, Damien Codognotto OAM and Bernie Bickerton discuss the 2016 TOY RUN for FATHER BOB in the Richmond (Vic.) Town Hall.

Cr Roberto Colanzi sees the role  motorcyclists & scooter riders must play in Melbourne's future and he's prepared to do    something about it starting with hosting the TOY RUN for FATHER BOB at Victoria Park on December 11. If you have a vote in the City of Yarra elections, please consider voting for Roberto Colanzi.

Hi Neighbour
The Yarra City Council election will be held this Saturday on 22 October.
I have been humbled by the number of residents who have volunteered to assist me seeking re-election to Council. And thank you to the many residents who have raised questions and concerns with me.
I hope I have done enough for you to actively consider me for your Number 1 Vote on Saturday.
Information on the election, including postal voting etc can be found here https://www.vec.vic.gov.au/yarraElection/
The booths in the Nicholls Ward are at:
  • McPherson St, Princes Hill
  • Merri Creek Primary
  • Carlton North Primary
  • North Fitzroy Primary
  • St Michael’s  North Fitzroy, and
  • Fitzroy Primary.
If you would like more information about me, you can find out more here:
While I have been campaigning, I have continued working hard as your Councillor and as the Mayor.
I was interviewed by The Age http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/highrise-plan-casts-long-shadow-in-fitzroy-north-20160926-groy5y.html and spoke out against the aggressive 476 apartment, 16 Story building proposed for Queens Parade.
I was also interviewed by a Government journal based in Singapore https://govinsider.asia/innovation/interview-mayor-of-yarra-australia/ about the issues I am pursuing in Yarra.
I’ve had follow-up media coverage on:
But there is 1 more task.
Important task in any election is to staff the polling booths.
In the Nicholls ward, there are 6 polling booths. We need volunteers, for no matter how short a time you can provide, to assist with the very important task of handing out how to votes, scrutineering, booth organisation, etc. If you can assist, your help will be gratefully appreciated. Even if you have no experience, but are keen to help, don’t let that put you off. More hands and friendly resident and community faces the better.
Below is the text of an earlier email I sent to you setting out the various policy positions I introduced, and or supported in the current term of Council, and those that I will seek to advance in the next four year term.
If you have any questions, and can volunteer please let me know at:
Or Phone 04122 888 00 – or text through your name, contact number and polling booth
And this is the How To Vote card for the Yarra Election, for the 3 Wards.

Cheers

EARLIER EMAIL

Dear neighbour
I am running for re-election to City of Yarra Council.
At some time over the past four years, we have communicated over one or more issues of importance to you.
I am writing to seek consideration for your vote, to continue to represent the people of Nicholls ward (Fitzroy, Collingwood, Princes Hill, North Fitzroy, and North Carlton).
Over the last four years I have fought hard for:
  • In my first 2 years on Council saw in the process to plan and build the North Fitzroy library & community hub, which the community for 30 years has been calling on Council to undertake
  • Worked with both private & not for profit providers to increase the number of places available in childcare facilities. A project of note was the opening of a bilingual language kindergarten in North Fitzroy
  • Saw in strong responses to New Year’s Eve celebrations, especially in Edinburgh Gardens
  • Maintained a strong position against developer construction encroachment in public parks and open spaces
  • Supported the overwhelming community position to see no harm to the environmentally sensitive Rushall Reserve in North Fitzroy
  • Opposed many high rise building planning applications across the city, and
  • Supported strong and robust financial management of Council’s budget.
I was also appointed to the Local Government Minister’s Mayoral Advisory Panel, and was elected to the mayoralty last year, unanimously and unopposed by my eight fellow councillors.
In the next four year term of Council, I will take a leading position to ensure the following strategies and policies are introduced:
  • Preserve and plan for more public parks and open space
  • Preserve existing public parks and gardens, such as Edinburgh Gardens (North Fitzroy), Rushall Reserve, (North Fitzroy) Darling Gardens  (Clifton Hill) and other locations
  • Support more not-for-profit and public child care facilities
  • Support best practice and provision of aged care facilities, especially for our most vulnerable
  • Advocate for improved linear and radial buses services in and across Yarra
  • Work for an indoor sports stadium for basketball, netball, badminton and other sports uses
  • Advocate for harsher penalties of taggers and graffiti vandals
  • Reduce dog and cat permit fees and charges
  • Better environmental sustainable design for commercial buildings, leading to zero greenhouse gas emission buildings
  • Improve sports infrastructure for women and girls, such as change rooms and netball courts
  • Advocate for increased public and social housing as a key condition of any high density residential development
  • Institute participatory and community led democracy forums in Council’s strategy and policy decisions, such as annual budget considerations
  • Maintain low fees, charges, and rates
  • Advocate for heritage and planning controls for the Yarra river corridor
  • Encourage installation of ‘micro-grid’ energy systems, and make such measures a planning (zoning) requirement
  • Promote energy upgrade agreements, and encourage take up of energy performance contracts and similar in Yarra’s commercial sector to reduce GHG emissions
If you are already planning to vote for me on 22nd October, thank you.
If you would like more information about me, you can find out more here:
If you are able to help out with my campaign, please let me know. There are different ways to help: door knocking; putting up a poster in your window or garden; handing out how to vote cards on the day or during pre-polling. I am also running a crowd funding campaign through https://www.gofundme.com/roberto4yarra Small amounts are greatly appreciated and you can donate anonymously.
Thank you for your consideration.
