I just picked up this "blog" and it seems to me you have issues which go far beyond reasonable critiquing.
Right To Ride is a small company of two people. Just to be crystal clear, I - Elaine Hardy received NO FUNDING from any organisation apart from £2000 from the BMF Foundation which is a branch of the British Motorcyclists Federation, a Riders' Rights organisation, after I had already completed the study.
Simply your analysis is sloppy, unprofessional and simply amateurish. You evidently didn't read the report or if you did you were very selective.
As an example you ask "How was crash scene data was collected?" -
The study which was an analysis of the Forensic Science Road Traffic Collision investigation team in Northern Ireland. But it's all in the report.
Pull your head in mate. You want to critique a report - at least have the courtesy of writing to the author to ask first to get answers.
Sheesh - amateurs - you people should be quarantined.

and another thing.... My partner at Right To Ride, Trevor Baird was the General Secretary of the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG UK) and technical officer for the Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA) for many years before returning to Northern Ireland where he's from. I was the Research Officer of MAG UK and then FEMA before coming to Northern Ireland. My credentials are intact.
But I guess you were too busy with your delusional diatribe of trying to demonstrate what an amazing analyst you are....
And... all the participants in the focus group with one exception were experienced riders - including the ex Chairman of MAG Ireland and the chairman of the All Ireland Chopper Club. There was a list of all the participants - which you evidently forgot to mention to your readers... I wonder why?
I am absolutely astounded and seriously hacked off that you bozos didn't take the time to read the report with a minimum of objectivity.
WTF does your comment "APPEARS" infer??
From an analytical perspective, it means simply that based on the evidence taking into consideration a series of factors - that car drivers appeared not to be expecting to see a motorcycle... and???
What seriously pisses me off is the inference that I'm some sort of government stooge. I take that personally.

Northern Ireland Motorcycle Study - 2012
Dear Dr Hardy.
When your paper came out the Australian motorcycle &
scooter community was making submissions to a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry
into bike safety (PIMS). My blog was more to point out that government
departments here needed to be very careful when using overseas studies. The
amount of valid motorcycle & scooter research done in this country is very
small so when a paper like yours is presented during a PIMS, rider reps are
interested.
To give you an idea of the quality of advice road
authorities here rely on. We met Dr Alexandra Douglas in June 2014. She advises
Roads Minister Mulder who proposes a lights-on law that could alter a rider's
legal status after a crash. We oppose lights-on laws. PIMS did not recommend any
conspiuity laws. Dr Douglas astounded us by justifying the lights-on law saying
it was to stop novice riders switching their headlights off. Bikes have been
sold in Australia without headlight switches for over 20 years! Bike laws in
this country are rarely based on good science or quality local
research.
Too often government departments here are selective with
data they use to justify their policies and proposals. My blog pointed out that
there were many factors in this environment that would not effect riders in
Belfast and vice versa. Therefore, Australian road authorities need to be very
careful when using overseas studies to support their theories. What may be valid
in Belfast, may not be in Melbourne.
In Australia we have major problems with crash scene data
collection and analysis. How crash scene data is collected was, and is, a
legitimate question. The problem with crash scene data here is so serious that
it was the number one PIMS recommendation. The link is above.
I put your statistics on the blog and identified (my bold
italics). I put in appropriate links so readers could study your paper further. I
think you got a fair go.
I also think you overreacted.

Hi Damian,
What about other organisations that are known for having
criminals such as churches, parliament, unions and every police organisation in
Australia!! It’s clear that almost every organisation in existence has criminal
members, but that doesn’t mean it’s a criminal organisation. It’s the individual
members that need to be judged, and the laws are already in place for this to
happen.
I often hear the police saying that there is “Indisputable
Evidence” of criminal activity in a particular organisation, and so we need to
control that organisation. However, if there was real evidence then they should
present that evidence to a judge and have the persons involved prosecuted.
There’s obviously no real evidence and they’re just making it up to get more
power (or some other obscure reason). It’s a bit like the “Indisputable
Evidence” of “Weapons of Mass Destruction”, they used to justify a war. It
turned out the evidence was fabricated and they just wanted an excuse for a
war!! The real criminals are those making the false claims (Thou shalt not bear
false witness against thy neighbour).

Damien, I live in Tamworth- a little far away to be able to be
there in person- but I will be watching to see what happens! It's just over 49
years since I bought my first bike (Honda 50 Super Cub!) and have owned around
50 bikes of all shapes and sizes since then, so I know about harassment, even of
innocent riders!
Re your comment about Baby Boomers getting old and lazy- we have been constantly told by younger "high-flyers" that we are "past it", and have become lazy by being spoiled in this country. I, for one, am starting to stand up again, to be counted. Political correctness is killing Australia.

This rapid dispersal of our basic rights is not only limited to bikers- it
seems to be right across the board, and for too long Aussies have been saying
"she'll be right, mate"! Sorry- it won't be, unless we do something about it.
Keep fighting, mate, and I will be praying for success, and for an intelligent
outcome.

The scary thing is, the criminal organisations law
is happening.
Apathy and gutless representation is letting it
happen. The Baby Boomers got old and lazy and the generations since have got
progressively more selfish. The Australians from WW2 and before are all but
gone.
Hopefully we will pull big numbers and big media on the 3 dates in August.
If we don't, that's another step on the way to a
police state where motorcycles will be the first things banned.

What happened to innocent till proven guilty? Another law for them to
harass any one who rides a motorcycle we did not give this government the power
or the police to do what they like. We did not vote for this government to harass
any one. They are supposed to look after us all, not harass us. We don't need laws anew
to do this not all bikies are crims. There are more crooked cops and
politicians than bikies. I'm wondering when the cops pull up and harass the wrong
bloke and he goes off, what will they do arrest him for telling them they a bunch
of arseholes. And don't go down the path of you have nothing to fear if a cop
pulls you up and you aint done a thing wrong and you object to the way you get
treated you get surrounded and then give us any more crap to deal
with.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 2014.
There will be a rally at Parliament House in Melbourne, in fact there
will rallies in all capital cities except Sydney who are doing it this
weekend. The Melbourne protest is particularly important because
VicRoads are introducing their compulsory conspicuity laws with a
graded licence system (GLS) and because the Attorney General will
attempt to push through a law to declare various organisations
"criminal". Details will go on facebook and the blog.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2014.
The Victorian Attorney General will attempt the second reading of his
criminal organisations law. I will be in the public gallery in the
Legislative Assembly in Parliament House, Melbourne until the bill is
read. I'll get there at 9 am. I'm inviting other riders to join me.

There will be a FREE seminar to hear speakers on the future of
motorcycling in Victoria/Australia then question & answer sessions.
Everyone pays for their own lunch/drinks. The bistro is open from
noon. Speakers and Q & A from 2 pm till 4 pm. We have invited some MPs
and lawyers. The aim is to bring riders up to date on the VicRoads and
Attorney General moves and to prepare a campaign for the lead up to
the Victorian Election on Novemeber 29, 2014.
